I work for a real estate investment company, and we have locations around the globe. I started working there while I was in college. Believe it or not, I started my career there as a clerk in the mail room. I worked there part time and I went to school to get my degree at night. But now, I am one of our company’s biggest executives. I do quite a bit of traveling. I was just told that I will be going flying out to watch over a new condo launch in Singapore just months ago. That has now turned into a permanent move to the area.
I have to be ready at a moment’s notice to travel. That has always been the way it is since I became an executive. Sometimes, I am only given a day or two notice. It just depends on what I need to oversee at whatever location I need to get to. I mostly fly around the US, but in the past year, I have already been sent out of the country about five times.
After attending the launch of the new complex that we built in Singapore, I nonchalantly mentioned to the president of our company that I would not mind being sent there for any other duties that need to be done. He said that sounded great because they were thinking of asking me if I would like to move there for the next three to five years. With the move would come a promotion with a very large pay raise. They want me to stay there and manage our location there because they were so happy with how I handled the trip.
After asking for a little time to think about it, I took my company up on the offer to move and manage things overseas. It is long-term, but I will be back. In the meantime, I have my sights set on learning and doing new things on a daily basis there.
